Music is highly valued at Boscastle School. Learning about music and having the opportunity to play musical instruments and sing together is a vital part of the rich and rounded education we aim to provide. Music is facilitated by classroom teachers, specialist teachers, professional performers and the Cornwall Music Hub enabling children to increase their knowledge and understanding, develop their skills, confidence and expression in music through singing and playing simple melodic instruments, tuned and un-tuned percussion; exploring sounds, and active and passive listening. The benefits of music have also been proven and play a key role in brain development because it helps with the nurturing of language, motor skills, emotional intelligence and collaboration skills. Singing can improve pupils’ learning, confidence, health and social development.

Music is at the heart of our school, the wider community of our village and our county, which has a rich heritage based on music and singing. We want all children to have a wide range of musical opportunities during their time here at Boscastle, through combination of classroom teaching, instrumental and vocal tuition, opportunities to play in ensembles and the chance to learn from professional musicians. Staff at Boscastle share a love of music, they maintain the school’s musical traditions as well as identify new opportunities to extend music experiences for all children. Our music curriculum includes opportunities to play musical instruments, to sing, to listen and appraise, to compose, to read and write music and to perform. We aim for equality of opportunity for all pupils, regardless of their levels of musical talent, language, parental income, whether they have special educational needs or disabilities, and whether they are looked after children.

Our hope is as children move on into secondary education and adult life, they will continue to enjoy engaging in music which may be through continued instrumental tuition, joining a band or ensemble, singing in a choir and fostering a lifelong love of music

Charanga Musical School

Charanga Musical School Units of Work to enable children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. Learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills.

Over time, children can both develop new musical skills and concepts, and re-visit established musical skills and concepts. Repeating a musical skill doesn’t necessarily mean their progress is slowing down or their development is moving backwards! It’s just shifting within the spiral. Mastery means both a deeper understanding of musical skills and concepts and learning something new.

Each Unit of Work comprises the of strands of musical learning which correspond with the national curriculum for music:

  1. Listening and Appraising
  2. Musical Activities – games, singing, playing instruments, Improvisation and composition.
  3. Performing
